Somdev Devvarman is a retired Indian professional tennis player who achieved significant success on the international stage. Born on February 13, 1985, in Guwahati, Assam, he displayed a prodigious talent for tennis from a young age. He honed his skills at the Saddlebrook Academy in Florida, a renowned training center for aspiring tennis professionals. Devvarman's college career at the University of Virginia was exceptionally decorated. He became the only college player to make three consecutive finals at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, winning backtoback titles in 2007 and 2008.
Turning professional in 2008, Devvarman quickly made his mark on the ATP tour. Known for his relentless baseline game, exceptional fitness, and unwavering determination, he reached the finals of two ATP World Tour events in 2009, Chennai and Newport. He achieved a careerhigh singles ranking of World No. 62 in July 2011. A key member of the Indian Davis Cup team, Devvarman played crucial roles in many memorable victories, showcasing his patriotism and commitment to representing his country. He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 2011, a prestigious recognition of his outstanding achievements in sports. Plagued by recurring shoulder injuries, Devvarman announced his retirement from professional tennis in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to the sport in India.
