Upendrakishore Chowdhury - A Lifestory
Visionary Artist, Writer, And Innovator: Enriching Bengali Culture

Someone born in Bengal on 10 May 1863 was a very special person. He was good at many things, like writing stories, drawing pictures, and starting businesses. He made lots of kids happy with his fun stories and pictures. Think of him as someone who did new things, like the first people who made Indian movies. But instead of movies, he changed how kids' books were made. He was not just a writer; he was also a great artist. His pictures made his stories more real, and kids loved them because they were so nice and had lots of small details. Imagine his art being shown with famous Indian paintings; that's how good he was! Also, he was always trying to make things better. He knew that it was important to print things well. So, he started a printing shop called U. Ray and Sons. There, he tried out new ways to make blocks for printing, including ways to make pictures look more real. This was like someone making a new camera lens when cameras were first invented – really amazing! People say that he was never happy with how his stories looked when they were printed, and he wanted to make them better. His work still matters today. He was the father of a famous movie maker, whose movies like "Pather Panchali" have made people all over the world feel something. The way he thought about new ideas and being creative went on to his family, making him a very important person in Bengali culture. He died on 20 December 1915, but his books are still loved today.
