Urjit Patel is an Indian economist and banker who served as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from September 2016 to December 2018. Born in London, Patel received his undergraduate degree in economics from the London School of Economics, followed by an M.Phil. from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 1990. His academic background provided a strong foundation for his career in economic policy and financial institutions.
Prior to his role as RBI Governor, Patel held several significant positions, including Deputy Governor of the RBI, advising on monetary policy, economic policy research, statistics, and information management. He also worked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), serving on deputation to its India desk from 1995 to 1997. Furthermore, he held advisory roles within the Indian government, contributing to discussions on economic reforms and policy frameworks.
As Governor of the RBI, Patel was instrumental in implementing monetary policy decisions, including managing inflation and overseeing the stability of the Indian financial system. He played a crucial role in the aftermath of the demonetization of 500 and 1000 rupee notes in 2016, navigating the challenges of currency replacement and its impact on the economy.
