Early Career

• Varun Chakravarthy Vinod was born to Vinod Chakravarthy, an ITS officer working with BSNL, and Malini. His father is of half-Tamil and half-Malayali descent, while his mother is a Kannadiga. Varun was brought up in Adyar, Chennai, where he spent most of his formative years.

• Varun completed his schooling at Kendriya Vidyalaya CLRI and St. Patrick’s School in Chennai. During his early years, he showed interest in cricket and initially played as a wicket-keeper. However, he stepped away from the sport to focus on academics. He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from SRM University.

• At the age of 25, Varun made a bold decision to give up his career as an architect to pursue cricket professionally. • Varun Chakravarthy came into the limelight during the 2018 Tamil Nadu Premier League, where he picked up nine wickets at an economy rate of 4.70. His impactful performances played a key role in Madurai Panthers winning their maiden TNPL title.
• 🏠 Entry into Tamil Nadu Cricket
• Following his TNPL success, Varun made his List A debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy on 20 September 2018. He emerged as the leading wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu, claiming 22 wickets in nine matches. He later made his first-class debut in the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy on 12 November 2018.

• In December 2018, Varun was bought by Kings XI Punjab at the 2019 IPL auction for ₹84 million. He made his IPL debut on 27 March 2019 against Kolkata Knight Riders, conceding 25 runs in his first over, the most by a bowler on IPL debut. • During the 2021 IPL, Varun topped KKR’s wicket charts despite the tournament being disrupted after he tested positive for COVID-19.
