Early Career

• While studying English literature at Loyola College, Vetrimaaran took a course on television presentation, which required making a short film. During this experience, he discovered his passion for filmmaking. • Vetrimaaran approached producer S. Kathiresan with multiple scripts. While one was rejected, Polladhavan (2007) was approved. The story was partly inspired by the stolen bike of his friend Andrew and his experiences tracking it down. The script was tailored to suit the visual medium and Dhanush’s physicality as an action hero.

• Following the success of Polladhavan, Vetrimaaran reunited with Dhanush, Kishore, producer S. Kathiresan, and composer G. V. Prakash Kumar to make Aadukalam (2011), a film depicting the intense rivalry between cockfighters in Madurai. To ensure authenticity, Vetrimaaran spent two years in Madurai studying the local dialect and lifestyle. The screenplay, dialogues, and script took him a full year to complete, and he initially narrated only half the script to Dhanush, who agreed to act after being impressed. Originally titled Seval, the film was renamed Aadukalam due to rights issues.
