Vikram Batra - A Lifestory

Vikram Batra: (09 September 1974-07 July 1999). He was the third of four children, with two older sisters and a twin brother. His father, G.L. Batra, was a government school principal, and his mother, Kamal Kanta Batra, was a schoolteacher. From a young age, Vikram displayed exceptional leadership qualities, academic prowess, and a deep sense of patriotism. One of Vikram Batra's most significant achievements was his role in the capture of Point 5140 during the Kargil War in June 1999. As a Lieutenant in the 13th Battalion, Jammu & Kashmir Rifles, he led his Delta Company to a successful assault on the strategically vital peak. His bravery and inspirational leadership during the operation earned him the moniker "Sher Shah" (Lion King) and cemented his reputation as a fearless warrior. The capture of Point 5140 was crucial in securing the Indian Army's position in the Dras sector. Following the capture of Point 5140, Batra volunteered for another challenging mission: the capture of Point 4875, also known as "Hump." Despite facing intense enemy fire and treacherous terrain, he and his men pressed forward with unwavering determination. In a daring act of bravery, Batra personally eliminated several enemy soldiers in close combat, allowing his troops to advance. During this assault, he famously uttered the victory cry, "Yeh Dil Maange More!" ("This heart wants more!"), which became a symbol of the Indian Army's relentless spirit. Tragically, on July 7, 1999, during the assault on Point 4875, Vikram Batra made the ultimate sacrifice. While rescuing an injured fellow officer, he exposed himself to enemy fire and was fatally wounded. His selfless act of courage saved the life of his comrade and inspired his troops to complete the mission successfully. Vikram Batra's exceptional bravery, leadership, and sacrifice during the Kargil War left an indelible mark on the Indian Army and the nation. His actions significantly contributed to India's victory in the war and boosted the morale of the armed forces. Posthumously, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration, for his unparalleled courage and sacrifice.
