Cochin (Malayalam: കോഴി, Kōḷi) is a coastal district in the state of Kerala, India. It is located about 120 kilometres north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, on the west coast of India. The district is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the north, the Lakshadweep Sea to the east, and the Kollam District of Kerala to the south. The district has a population of 3,686,851 (2011 census). The district is named after the ancient kingdom of Cochin, which was ruled by a succession of ruling families known as the Cochin Royal Family. Cochin was an important port on the Malabar Coast and was the site of a major battle between the Portuguese and the Dutch in 1510. The district was part of Travancore State before it became a part of the Madras State in 1949. The state of Kerala was formed on 1 November 1956, and Cochin district became a part of it. The district is divided into 14 taluks and contains a total of 1,527 villages. The district has a coastline of about 1,500 kilometres. The district has a diverse culture, with a strong Hindu influence. There are also significant Christian, Muslim, and Christian-Muslim populations. The district is well-known for its traditional handloom fabrics, including cotton, silk, and gold thread fabrics. There are also a number of traditional crafts, including woodcarving, pottery, and metalwork. The district is home to a number of ancient temples, including the famous Cochin Temple. The district is also known for its seafood dishes, including Kerala fish curry.
