Long before a baby's name is chosen, many Indian families look up at the night sky. To understand which names those families actually choose, iMeUsWe studied 1.47 billion heritage records to identify India's most popular baby names by nakshatra.
A nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions, or birth stars, that the Moon passes through each month. In Vedic tradition, the nakshatra the Moon occupies at the moment of birth suggests the sound a baby's name should begin with. Each nakshatra is divided into four quarters, called padas, and each quarter has its own syllable. A child born under Ashwini nakshatra, for example, would traditionally get a name starting with Chu, Che, Cho or La.
Our study found that families follow this tradition far less strictly than the texts prescribe, and their reasons are often deeply traditional in their own right.
Take Punarvasu, the seventh nakshatra, whose prescribed sounds are Ke, Ko, Ha and Hi. The name most strongly linked to Punarvasu in our records is Ram, India's most common name, carried by 96.6 lakh people. Ram starts with none of those sounds. The reason lies in the Ramayana: Lord Rama himself was born under Punarvasu. Families who share his birth star seem to have looked past the syllable chart to the god himself.
That pattern runs through the entire study. Only 31 of the 115 names most linked to each nakshatra, about 27%, begin with a prescribed syllable. In 14 of the 27 nakshatras, not one of the top names follows the rule.
That isn't Indians abandoning the tradition. It's Indians using it in their own way.
How We Studied Nakshatra Names
We took the names most strongly associated with each of the 27 nakshatras in iMeUsWe's records and checked each one against its nakshatra's traditional syllables.
Two things to keep in mind while reading the tables. First, syllable charts vary by region and tradition; we used the most widely followed one, so your family's purohit may use slightly different sounds. Second, the figures beside each name (national rank, number of people, gender split) are all-India totals for that name. They are not counts of people born under that nakshatra.
The 5 Nakshatras Where Tradition Holds Strongest
Across iMeUsWe's genealogy records, five nakshatras stand out for how closely their top names stick to the prescribed syllables.
| Nakshatra | Prescribed syllables | Names that follow the rule | Rule-following share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jyeshtha | No, Ya, Yi, Yu | Nogen, Yamanavva, Yasminbanu, Yunima | 4 of 4 |
| Uttara Bhadrapada | Du, Tha, Jha, Na | Jharu, Jh ag ru, Jhariya, Jhareswar | 4 of 5 |
| Swati | Ru, Re, Ro, Ta | Rupjan, Rookamani, Rebika, Rohina | 4 of 5 |
| Chitra | Pe, Po, Ra, Ri | Ramgulam, Ramkisun, Ramcharitra | 3 of 4 |
| Mrigashira | Ve, Vo, Ka, Ki | Kayam, Veero, Kisturi | 3 of 5 |
Uttara Bhadrapada is the most striking. Four of its five top names begin with Jha: Jharu, Jhagru, Jhariya and Jhareswar. Few Indian names start with Jha at all, so a cluster this tight is hard to explain as coincidence.
Chitra shows a clever workaround. Its syllables include Ra, which lets families put Ram at the front of a longer name: Ramgulam, Ramkisun and Ramcharitra. Ram himself doesn't start with Punarvasu's syllables, but in Chitra, Ram-names fit the rule exactly.
Jyeshtha gives a caution worth keeping in mind. Its list includes Yasminbanu, a name from a Muslim family, which almost certainly wasn't chosen from a nakshatra chart. It fits the "Ya" syllable by chance. Some of the rule-following in any list like this is coincidence, and an honest analysis should say so.
The Nakshatras Where Parents Went Their Own Way
Now the other half. These nakshatras' top names ignore the prescribed syllables entirely, and the reasons are more interesting than "people don't care."
Punarvasu: the god, not the letter. Ram (#1 nationally, 96.6 lakh people) heads the list, followed by Rahul (#24) and Abhishek (#133). With Rama born under this nakshatra, the deity connection beats the syllable chart.
Rohini: Krishna's star. Krishna is in Rohini's top five, with 29.3 lakh people nationally. Krishna's birth is traditionally placed under Rohini. Next to him are three of India's five most common women's names: Lakshmi (#2), Sunita (#3) and Anita (#5). None of them begins with O, Va, Vi or Vu. At that scale, Rohini's list mostly reflects what an entire generation was named.
Ashlesha: an echo instead of a rule. Ashok (#13, 32.9 lakh people) leads Ashlesha, though its prescribed syllables are Di, Du, De and Do. Ashok and Ashlesha share their opening sound, "Ash." We can't prove that was intentional, but sound-matching like this comes up repeatedly when parents bend the rule.
Revati: modern names win. All five of Revati's top names belong to girls, and none uses De, Do, Cha or Chi. Prisha and Shraiya are recent names. Bhastiben, Renavva and Gyanwati come from older generations. For Revati, the syllable rule seems to have lost out to fashion in both eras.
Mula: one giant name. Sanjay, India's #7 name with 38.6 lakh people, tops Mula, whose syllables are Ye, Yo, Bha and Bhi. As with Rohini, a name this common turns up in every nakshatra. Its position here says more about the 1970s and 80s than about Mula.
We Expected National Favourites. We Found Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
We assumed each nakshatra's list would be full of India's most common names. A few were (Ram, Lakshmi, Sanjay, Santosh), but most weren't.
Instead, two regional naming styles dominate. Gujarati Rajput names ending in -sinh appear 11 times across 9 nakshatras: Devisinh, Vikramsinh, Premsinh, Lakshmansinh, Virendrasinh, Ratansinh, Narayansinh and Amarsinh. Their female counterparts ending in -ba or -ben (Ramaban, Deviban, Induban, Bhastiben) appear across five more lists. Tamil names form a second cluster: Valarmathi, Kamalam, Nadarajan, Loganathan, Balasubramanian and Manimegalai.
Why these two regions? We think the answer lies in how strongly birth-star traditions are kept there. Many Gujarati families choose names by the letters assigned to the baby's rashi. Many Tamil families celebrate birthdays by birth star (natchathiram) rather than by calendar date. Communities that pay close attention to the birth star are also more likely to record it, so their names appear most often when we look at the data through the lens of nakshatra.
Boy or Girl? What the Gender Split Reveals
Most names in the dataset are firmly one gender, with 95% or more of their bearers either male or female. The exceptions stand out:
- Ram is 18% female, which is about 16.3 lakh women. That most likely comes from compound names such as Ram Pyari or Ram Dulari that were split across record fields.
- Krishna is 33% female, or 8.8 lakh women. That makes it one of the most gender-balanced major names in India.
- Santosh is 21% female, or 7.8 lakh women. It's a familiar women's name in North India.
- Lakshmi is 9% male, about 4.2 lakh men. That fits southern compounds like Lakshmi Narayan.
- Laksh, in Uttara Ashadha, is 54% female. That's surprising for a name usually given to boys, and it may be a shortened Lakshmi.
Some nakshatra lists lean strongly one way. All of Revati's top names are female, while Vishakha's are all male. With only a few names per nakshatra, though, treat this as an interesting observation rather than a pattern.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nakshatra Baby Names
1. What are the best names for Ashwini Nakshatra?
Ashwini's traditional syllables are Chu, Che, Cho and La, which give names like Chetan, Lavanya or Laksh. In iMeUsWe's records, though, the names most linked to Ashwini, such as Shivanshi and Bhani, don't follow those syllables. That's a reminder that many families choose by meaning rather than by letter.
2. Can I choose any name for my baby's nakshatra?
Yes, and many families do. A long-standing practice is to keep a nakshatra name (nakshatra nama) for rituals and the naming ceremony, and use a different everyday name. That way you keep the tradition without being limited by the syllable.
3. What are the name letters for Rohini Nakshatra?
Rohini's traditional syllables are O, Va, Vi and Vu. In our records, though, the names most linked to Rohini include Lakshmi, Sunita, Anita and Krishna. Krishna's own birth is traditionally placed under Rohini.
4. Is Ram a good name for Punarvasu Nakshatra?
By syllable, no, since Punarvasu's sounds are Ke, Ko, Ha and Hi. By tradition, many would say yes, because Lord Rama was born under Punarvasu. Ram is the name most strongly linked to Punarvasu in our data.
5. Do nakshatra syllables differ by region?
Yes. Syllable charts vary between North Indian, Gujarati, Marathi and South Indian traditions, and some families use rashi letters instead. Check with your family purohit before finalising a name.
6. How many Indians actually follow nakshatra naming rules?
In our analysis, only 27% of the names most linked to each nakshatra start with a prescribed syllable. Rule-following is strongest in Jyeshtha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Swati, and weakest in Rohini, Punarvasu and Revati.
