Avijit Singh was a prominent figure known for his advocacy of secular humanism, free thought, and scientific reasoning, particularly within the context of Bangladesh. He emerged as a vocal critic of religious extremism and superstition, using his online platform, MuktoMona (Free Mind), to foster open discussions and critical analysis of societal issues. Through this platform, he facilitated the exchange of ideas and encouraged rational discourse on topics often considered taboo or sensitive within his cultural environment.

Singh's commitment to intellectual freedom and secularism led him to author and coauthor several books, exploring subjects such as the science of evolution, atheism, and the challenges of religious fundamentalism. His writings aimed to promote a scientific worldview and challenge dogmatic beliefs. He actively engaged with the public through his writing, speaking engagements, and online presence, fostering a community of likeminded individuals who valued critical thinking and intellectual exploration.

His outspoken views and activism, however, made him a target of extremist groups. He faced numerous threats and online harassment due to his critiques of religious fundamentalism and his promotion of secular values. Tragically, while visiting Dhaka, Bangladesh, in February 2015, he was brutally attacked and killed by religious extremists. His death sparked widespread condemnation and highlighted the dangers faced by individuals who advocate for free expression and secularism in environments where such views are met with hostility. His legacy continues to inspire those who champion freedom of thought and expression in the face of intolerance and violence.
