Dara Singh, born Deedar Singh Randhawa on November 19, 1928, in Dharmuchak village, Punjab, British India, was a multifaceted Indian personality renowned as a professional wrestler, actor, and politician. His wrestling career began in 1947, and he quickly gained prominence for his imposing physique and exceptional strength. He toured Southeast Asia and defeated numerous international wrestling champions, earning the title of "RustameHind" in 1954 for his victory against Tiger Joginder Singh. In 1968, he became the World Wrestling Champion after defeating Lou Thesz, a feat that solidified his legendary status in the sport. Dara Singh's wrestling prowess extended beyond the ring, leading him to a successful career in Indian cinema.

He transitioned to acting in the 1950s, initially portraying wrestler characters in films. He starred in numerous Hindi and Punjabi films, often playing the role of Hanuman in mythological movies like "Bajrangbali" (1976) and the television series "Ramayan" (1987). His portrayal of Hanuman resonated deeply with audiences, cementing his image as a symbol of strength, devotion, and righteousness. Beyond his mythological roles, he acted in action films and family dramas, showcasing his versatility as an actor. He also directed and produced several films.

In his later years, Dara Singh ventured into politics. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha (Indian Parliament's upper house) in August 2003, serving a term until 2009. His presence in Parliament reflected his widespread popularity and respect among the Indian populace. Dara Singh passed away on July 12, 2012, leaving behind a legacy as a national icon, admired for his achievements in wrestling, acting, and his contribution to Indian culture.
