Guru Singh - A Lifestory

A person known for Manipuri dance, a lively and elegant type of dance, did more than just dance; they had a clear view of the future. They gave their life to making this old Indian dance known and loved again. Born in 01 January 1918, they started learning early, becoming very good at both dance and the detailed music that goes with it. They didn't just keep the old ways alive; they made new things, bringing new energy to old moves. Their effect went past just being on stage. They were very important in creating dance parts for well known Indian movies like "Gumnaam" and "Umrao Jaan", showing Manipuri's beauty to more people. This person started the Manipur Nartanalaya in Kolkata, a school that has taught many dancers, such as Darshana Jhaveri, Kalavati Devi, and their own daughter, Bimbavati Devi. People who worked with them often said they worked very hard and made new dance moves. Their work was more than just acting; it was like a holy event, a party for life and beauty. They thought Manipuri dance could touch people's feelings and thoughts, helping them understand and like Indian culture. This person's work still gives ideas to dancers and art lovers all over the world, making sure Manipuri dance keeps growing. They got the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 01 January 1966.
