Historically, they belonged to a large trade network called the "Five Hundred Lords of Ayyavolu," which connected South India and other regions. Known as "Vira Balanjyas" (warrior merchants), they defended their trade with armed forces. Balijas occupied key roles in the Vijayanagara Empire, including ministers, military leaders, and governors. Some Balija families founded Nayaka dynasties, governing areas such as Madurai and Thanjavur. The title "Nayaka" became linked to the community, representing their increase in political and cultural influence. During the British Raj, their Varna status was discussed, but Balijas have greatly influenced South Indian history and society through trade, governance, and military skills.
