The name "Chakram" comes from the Sanskrit word "cakra" (चक्र), meaning "wheel" or "circle." Think of a spinning potter's wheel—that's the core concept. The word evolved to refer to a flat, round, metal weapon with a sharp outer edge used in ancient India. Mythologically, the chakra is linked to Vishnu, a major Hindu god, often shown holding the Sudarshana Chakra, a strong spinning disc weapon. So, this name gained significance as it symbolized both a real weapon and a sacred symbol of power, protection, and righteousness in Hinduism and related traditions.

The chakram is culturally significant in the Indian subcontinent, appearing in ancient epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana as the weapon of Vishnu. Krishna is also associated with the chakram, known as Chakra-dhāri, meaning "chakram-wielder."
