The cultural significance of *Sijo* lies in its role as a traditional Korean poetic form. Emerging during the Goryeo dynasty and flourishing in the Joseon dynasty, *Sijo* poems often explore bucolic, metaphysical, and cosmological themes. Early *Sijo* was sung melodically, emphasizing strict rhythmic patterns. *Sijo* gained popularity among the *yangban* (ruling class) and commoners, evolving from classical Chinese to Korean.

*Sijo chang*, a variation, incorporates musical instruments like the *daegeum* (bamboo flute) and *janggu* (hour-glass shaped drum). *Kisaeng* (female entertainers) contributed to *Sijo*, expressing emotional freedom in their poetry. *Sijo* poems often employ metaphors, puns, and allusions. *Sijo* served as a vehicle for religious or philosophical expression in royal courts.

Sijo, which can also be spelled Seajo, is a Korean verse form.

"SEE-joh" (syllables: SI-JO) is pronounced with the stress on the first syllable. The pronunciation is usually consistent, but some speakers may soften the "J" sound depending on their regional accents.
