Mythologically, it embodies a land of perpetual conflict with Iran, representing wildness and otherness. This name became a symbol of the "other," signifying a rival civilization or cultural force. Subsequently, in certain nationalistic contexts, it was embraced to symbolize a pan-nationalist identity uniting diverse groups throughout Central Asia, although this usage is more contemporary than its original mythological significance.

In ancient Iranian culture, Turan signifies more than just a location; it's deeply intertwined with historical narratives and cultural identity. The Shahnameh, a celebrated Persian epic, recounts how Tur, a son of King Fereydun, received the lands of Turan. This establishes the Turanians as kin to the Iranians, yet residing in distinct territories, frequently marked by conflict.

The Avesta, an ancient religious text, identifies the Tuiryas (Turanians) as neighbors to the Aryans (Iranians). During the Sasanian Empire, Turan evolved into the recognized land northeast of Iran, inhabited by its adversaries.

The term Turan has also been associated with nomadic peoples and, subsequently, with Turkic groups. It represents both a geographical area and a specific way of life, contrasting with the settled, "civilized" lands of Iran. Today, the name Turan retains cultural significance in the Middle East, appearing in personal names and reflecting a connection to this historical region.
