The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is the aerial warfare branch of the Australian Defence Force. The RAAF traces its history back to the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) which was formed on 3 August 1914 in response to the outbreak of World War I. The ANMEF was later re-designated the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) on 31 March 1921 and became the RAAF on 1 January 1926. The RAAF has played a leading role in several major conflicts in which Australia has been involved, including the Second World War, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The RAAF has also been involved in numerous peacekeeping operations, including in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and the former Yugoslavia. During the war, the RAAF acquired a total of 416 aircraft, including 54 Spitfires and 104 bombers. The RAAF also played a significant role in the Pacific War, with aircraft based in Australia participating in many of the major campaigns. The RAAF played a leading role in the Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Coral Sea, and the Battle of Midway. The RAAF played a significant role in the Korean War, with aircraft based in Australia participating in many of the major campaigns. The RAAF also played a leading role in the Vietnam War, with aircraft based in Australia participating in many of the major campaigns. The RAAF has also been involved in numerous peacekeeping operations, including in East Timor, the Solomon Islands, and the former Yugoslavia.
