The name was originally given to Abu Ali al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, an Islamic scholar and mathematician who lived in Baghdad during the Abbasid period. Alberuni was also the name of an Islamic dynasty that ruled the Malwa region of present-day Madhya Pradesh, India from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
