Description:
The name 'Dalai Lama' is a Tibetan name meaning 'Great Teacher'. The first Dalai Lama was Gendun Gyatso, who was born in 1391 in Tibet. He became a monk at the age of six and began his spiritual journey at the age of twenty. He was recognized as the eleventh incarnation of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. After years of travelling and teaching, he died in 1474.
