Maharaja Ranjit Singh was a noted military leader and was also known for his philanthropy. The Maharaja Ranjit Singh dynasty was eventually overthrown by the British in 1849. The name “Maharaja” is also occasionally used as a honorific title for members of the royal families of various Indian states.
