Bamberg Bamberg is a city in Franconia, southern Germany. It is located on the River Regnitz, approximately 25 kilometres north of Nuremberg and 70 kilometres south of Munich. The city has a population of approximately 120,000. The city's name is derived from the Celtic word Bamburg, which meant 'fortified hill'. The city was first mentioned in 982. Bamberg was the capital of the Electorate of Bavaria from 1806 to 1815. The city was badly damaged in World War II and has since been rebuilt. Bamberg is known for its Bamberg Cathedral, the Residenz Palace, the Bamberg Lion, the Bamberg Gospels, the Bamberg Town Hall, the Bamberg Clock, the Bamberg Beer and the Bamberg Wine. Bamberg is also the home of the University of Bamberg, the oldest university in Franconia.
