The Ganannagounder name is derived from the Aboriginal word 'ganannagun', meaning 'place of the big waterhole'. The Ganannagounder people are believed to have originated in the Barwon River valley in the state of Victoria. They are one of the five main Aboriginal tribes in Victoria. The Ganannagounder people are a nomadic people, and their traditional way of life is based on hunting, fishing, and gathering. The Ganannagounder people have a rich culture, and their customs and traditions are unique. Some of their customs include the use of bark paintings and carvings, the singing of sacred songs, and the practice of ceremonial dancing. The Ganannagounder people are currently living in the towns of Wangaratta and Warburton in the state of Victoria. There are also small communities of Ganannagounder people living in the states of New South Wales, Queensland, and Western Australia.
