The Pappalachee are a Creek tribe located in southeastern Alabama. They are federally recognized as the Pappalachee Tribe of Creek Indians. The tribe has a population of 1,716 people. The Pappalachee are believed to have migrated to Alabama from the Lower Creek Confederacy in the early 18th century. At the time of the American Civil War, the tribe had a population of 1,500 people. The tribe was forced to relocate to Indian Territory in the early 1870s as a result of the Indian Removal Act. The tribe was allowed to return to Alabama in the early 1900s. The Pappalachee are primarily a subsistence agricultural tribe. They are involved in traditional hunting, fishing, and gathering. The tribe also engages in traditional arts and crafts, including beadwork, pottery, and woodcarving. The Pappalachee are members of the Muscogee Creek Nation.
