Bamberg is a city in the southern German state of Bavaria. It is the capital of the Upper Bavaria administrative district. The city has a population of approximately 210,000. The city was founded in the late 8th century by Charlemagne as a fortress on a hill above the Danube River, in what is now the Altstadt district. It became a bishopric in 836 and was granted city rights in 1180. Bamberg was the capital of the Bavarian Duchy of Bavaria from 1156 to 1806. Bamberg is known for its medieval cathedral, the Residenz, as well as for its traditional beer, the Bamberg Black Beer. The city is also home to the University of Bamberg and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development.
