Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly Banaras Hindu University of Varanasi, is a public research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Established in 1925, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in India. The Banaras Hindu University was founded in 1925 by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin. The university was formally inaugurated on 3 November 1925 by the then Prime Minister of India, Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru. The university started functioning from temporary quarters in the Varanasi Cantonment and in 1927, moved to its present campus in Varanasi. Banaras Hindu University has a long and rich tradition of teaching and research in religious, spiritual, and cultural subjects. The university has a rich tradition of teaching and research in business administration, law, education, engineering, and health sciences. Banaras Hindu University is ranked among the top 20 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The QS World University Rankings placed the university at number 301 in the world and number 1 in India in the 2016/17 rankings. The 2016/17 CWTS Leiden Ranking placed the university at number 601 in the world.
