BANKARPUR (Bengali: বন্ধারপুর) is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located on the north bank of the Ganges River, opposite the city of Kolkata. Bankarpur is the administrative headquarters of Bankura district. The city has a population of over 1.5 million people. The city was founded by the Nawab of Bankura, Mir Jafar Khan, in 1786. Bankarpur was the capital of the Nawab's state from 1786 to 1817. In 1817, the capital was moved to Kolkata. The city has a rich cultural heritage. The Nawab of Bankura was a patron of the arts, and the city has a number of monuments and buildings from the period of Nawab Mir Jafar Khan's rule.
