BANRAVURi is a town in the Virunga National Park in northern Rwanda. It is located on the shores of Lake Kivu, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town is served by the Banyarwanda-language BANRAVURI TV, which broadcasts local news, weather, and cultural programmes. The town was founded in 1892 by Belgian colonists. It was originally known as 'Kamanyola'. In the 1920s, it was renamed 'Banjavur', after the Indian city of Banjavur. The town's population was estimated to be around 10,000 in 2002. Banjavur is a centre for tourism in the Virunga National Park. The town is home to a variety of cultural events, including traditional music and dance performances. The town is also known for its pottery and textiles.
