BERGAMO BERGAMO, city and comune in the province of Sondrio, Lombardy, northern Italy. It lies on the left bank of the Bergamasque River, about 75 miles (120 km) north of Milan. The city was founded in the 8th century by the Lombard king Arduin I. It became an important commercial centre and was the seat of a bishopric from the 5th century. In the 12th century it was besieged by Frederick II, Holy Roman emperor. In the 14th century it was the site of a battle between the armies of the pope and the emperor. In the 16th century it was the capital of the duchy of Bergamo. The city is noted for its Renaissance and Baroque architecture, its glass and porcelain manufacture, and its lace-making industry. Bergamo is the seat of the University of Bergamo.
