CHAGAN The Chagan (also spelled Chagatai, Chakatai, Chakay, Chagatai, Chagatai-Khan, and Chagatai Khan) are a Turkic nomadic people who migrated from Central Asia in the 12th century and founded the Mongol Empire. They are the descendants of the Göktürks, a nomadic people who migrated from Central Asia in the 6th century. The Chagans are thought to have descended from the Qara Khitai, a Turkic people who settled in the Tarim Basin in what is now Xinjiang, China. The Chagans migrated westward in the 12th century and founded the Mongol Empire. They conquered much of Eurasia and formed the largest contiguous empire in world history. The Chagans were polytheistic and believed in a pantheon of gods and goddesses. They were also noted for their horsemanship, archery, and cavalry skills. The Chagans were nomadic and moved their horses and herds of sheep and goats across the steppes of Eurasia. They were also known for their raids into Byzantine and European territories. The Chagans were eventually conquered by the Mongols and became part of the Mongol Empire. The Chagans were eventually assimilated into the Mongol Empire and lost their language and culture. Today, the Chagans are a minority people living in Central Asia.
