CHANGMAI (Chinese: 長明) is a prefecture-level city in the north of the Chinese province of Shanxi. It is the capital of the Changzhi region. The city is located in the middle of the Yellow River basin and has a population of around 2 million. Changzhi is known for its terracotta warriors and other ancient relics. The city's name is derived from the name of the ancient kingdom of Chang'an. The kingdom was founded in the 4th century BC by the state of Qin, which became one of the most powerful states in China. Chang'an was the capital of the kingdom and remained so until the end of the kingdom in 221 BC. After the kingdom fell, Chang'an became a major trade center and became known as the 'City of Silk'. Chang'an was sacked by the Huns in the 5th century AD, but was later rebuilt by the Tang Dynasty. The city's name was changed to Changzhi in 1928.
