The Tatar name for the language is Qaraqalpaq or Qaraqalpaq-Ola (Qaraqalpaq means 'black mountain'). It is spoken by the Tatars in the Republic of Tatarstan and in neighboring regions of Russia. The language has a Turkic base, with borrowings from Mongolian, Russian, and other Turkic languages. The language has six vowel phonemes and twelve consonant phonemes.
