The Chaurshiyas are a sub-caste of the Kayastha caste, which is believed to have been formed by the 8th century sage and philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya. The Chaurshiyas are believed to have been formed in the 16th century, when the Kayastha caste split into two sub-castes.

The Chaurshiyas are divided into two sub-castes: the Chaurshiyas of Uttar Pradesh, and the Chaurshiyas of Bihar. The Chaurshiyas of Uttar Pradesh are further divided into two sub-castes: the Barahis and the Khatris. The Chaurshiyas of Bihar are further divided into the Rajputs and the Bhumihars.
