Description:
The Chayangs are a Hakka ethnic group originating in the Chayang Valley in the southern province of Guangdong, China. They are one of the 55 officially recognized ethnic groups in China. The Chayangs are also known as the Hakka people, the Chiang people, or the Chiangmai people. The Chayangs are believed to have migrated from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau around the 12th century. They initially settled in the Chayang Valley, where they engaged in agriculture and livestock breeding. The Chayangs were forced to migrate in the early 20th century due to the encroachment of the Han Chinese population and the spread of malaria. They migrated to other parts of Guangdong and Taiwan, where they have since established communities. The Chayangs are a Hakka ethnic group, and as such, they share many cultural traits with the Hakka people from the same region. They are predominantly Christians, and adhere to a variety of traditional beliefs. The Chayangs are known for their distinctive Hakka dialect, which is similar to the dialects spoken in the Chiangmai region. The Chayangs are also known for their traditional costume, which features a longyi (a traditional Thai-style sarong).
