The name Chennakesha is derived from the Mohawk word 'chennake', meaning 'place of the deer'. The name was originally given to a Mohawk chief who resided at the village of Chennakesha in present-day Upstate New York. The name has also been used by other Mohawk tribes, and is sometimes spelled Channakeesha or Channakeeshia. The Chennakesha Mohawk tribe traces its ancestry back to the 17th century. The tribe was first encountered by European traders in the early 17th century, and was first recorded in 1664.
