Description:
The name 'Georgetown' is derived from the Irish word 'Geoghegan,' meaning 'descendant of the foreigner.' The name was first given to a settlement on the Potomac River in 1751 by George Washington, the first President of the United States. The town was originally called 'Georgetown Plantation.' The town's name was changed to Georgetown in 1779 in honor of George Washington's nephew, George Washington Parke Custis, who had recently died. The town's name was also changed to Washington in 1845 in honor of George Washington's grandson, U.S. President George Washington. The town's present name was adopted in 1907.
