The Chiricahua are a tribe of Apache Indians. Their traditional homeland is in the Sierra Madre Occidental in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. The Chiricahua are also found in the United States, primarily in the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The Chiricahua are believed to have migrated from the north in the 16th century. They first encountered the Spanish in the 16th century, and were eventually defeated and subjugated by the Spanish. The Chiricahua were later granted limited autonomy by the Mexican government. The tribe currently has a population of around 2,000. The Chiricahua are a matrilineal society. They are divided into clans based on descent from a common female ancestor. Marriage is typically arranged between clans, and is considered a political alliance. Chiricahua culture is based on hunting and raiding. They are also known for their distinctive beadwork and quillwork.
