Chittaranjan Das (born August 14, 1946) is an Indian-born Canadian economist and academic who is currently the Chancellor of the University of Toronto. He is also a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Toronto. Chittaranjan Das was born in Calcutta, India, on August 14, 1946. He completed his undergraduate studies at Presidency College, Calcutta, and his graduate studies at the University of Cambridge, where he was awarded a PhD in economics in 1976. Das began his academic career at the University of Cambridge, where he was a Lecturer in Economics from 1976 to 1978. He then moved to the University of Toronto, where he was a Professor of Economics from 1978 to 2003. He was also the Director of the University of Toronto's Martin Prosperity Institute from 2003 to 2006. Das was appointed the Chancellor of the University of Toronto in June 2006. He has also been a Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Toronto since 2003. Das is a member of the Economic Club of Canada, the American Economic Association, and the Royal Society of Canada. He has also served on the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Das has written extensively on economic topics, including economic development, economic policy, and international trade. He has also published books on the economic history of India and the economic development of China. Chittaranjan Das was awarded the Order of Canada in 2005.
