Description:
The Chumuchagis are a First Nations people located in the Kootenays region of British Columbia. They are part of the Secwepemc nation. The Chumuchagis speak the Secwepemc language. The Chumuchagis are believed to have originated from the area around the Chilcotin River. The first recorded contact with the Chumuchagis was in 1792, when the Spanish explorer, Juan Pérez, encountered a group of Chumuchagis near the mouth of the Fraser River. In the early 1900s, the Chumuchagis were living in a number of villages along the Chilcotin River. In the 1930s, the Chumuchagis were relocated to a reservation located near the town of Likely. In the 1970s, the Chumuchagis were relocated again, this time to a new reservation located near the town of Ashcroft. The Chumuchagis are a traditional people who are skilled in the art of pottery. They also practice hunting and fishing. The Chumuchagis are members of the Secwepemc nation.
