Dachau is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated on the eastern edge of the Upper Palatinate Forest, about 45 km east of Munich. Dachau was founded by the Roman general Drusus in 8 BC as a military garrison on the eastern edge of the then German province of Raetia. The town was the capital of the province of Bavaria from 1802 to 1806. The Dachau concentration camp was opened in 1933, and consisted of three camps, named I, II, and III, with a total of 22 sub-camps. The main camp, I, was located on the outskirts of the town, while the other two camps were located in the town itself.
