Dhanbad is a city in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is the administrative headquarters of Dhanbad district. The city is located on the east bank of the Ganges River, about north of the state capital, Ranchi. The city has a population of 1,463,671 as of 2011. Dhanbad is said to have been founded in 1793 by a brahmin named Dhananjay Mahto. The city was originally known as 'Dhanbad-Mahto Nagar'. It was renamed Dhanbad in 1909 in honour of the Indian independence activist and poet, Rabindranath Tagore. Dhanbad is a major industrial and commercial center in eastern India. The city's industries include textiles, steel, engineering, chemicals, fertilizer, and paper products. Dhanbad is also a major railway junction. It is one of the most important coal-producing regions of India. Dhanbad has a hot, humid climate. The city experiences three seasons: a hot, humid summer season; a hot, dry winter season; and a cool, dry spring season. Dhanbad's culture is influenced by its proximity to the Gangetic plains and the Bengali culture. Dhanbad's cuisine is influenced by the Bengali, Punjabi, and Mughal cuisines. The city's traditional dance is the bhangra. There are many variations of the name Dhanbad.
