Middle English (14c.), from Old French dizime, from Late Latin scriptura, from Latin scriptus “written, inscribed,” from PIE root *skté- “to cut, mark out.”
The art of writing, printing, and publishing began in ancient times. The first books were probably created in China about 2,000 years ago. The art of bookmaking spread to the Middle East, Europe, and Africa during the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, and books began to be printed in large numbers. The first magazine, 'The Tatler,' was published in 1709. The first newspaper, 'The Daily Courant,' was published in 1731.
