EMPEREZ French From the medieval French name Emperaire, from Latin imperator (“leader”), from imperium (“command”). The English form is from the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Variations include Empereaux (“emperor”), Empereaux de Bourgogne (“emperor of Burgundy”), Empereaux de Normandie (“emperor of Normandy”). The French form was adopted in the Middle Ages by members of the royal family of France, who used it as a name given to their eldest son. It was also borne by several other European monarchs and their families, such as the Holy Roman Emperors and the House of Habsburg. The English form was adopted by the British royal family in the 16th century.
