History:

FOPSE is an acronym for 'Families of Portuguese Sephardic Extraction.' It is a term used to describe those of Sephardic Jewish descent who have a Portuguese background.
Sephardic Jews were expelled from Portugal in 1496, during the Spanish Inquisition. Many of them moved to other parts of Europe, while others settled in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas. Over the centuries, many of these families maintained their Portuguese heritage and culture, and the term FOPSE was created to recognize and honor this heritage.
