Gabala is a city in the Republic of Azerbaijan. It is located in the Absheron Peninsula, on the Caspian Sea. Gabala was founded in the early 8th century AD by the Arabs. The city was part of the Abbasid Caliphate and was known as Gubala. In the 9th century, it became part of the Samanid dynasty. In the 10th century, it was captured by the Seljuks and in the 11th century, it became part of the Ghaznavids. In the 12th century, it was captured by the Khwarezmians and in the 13th century, it became part of the Golden Horde. In the 14th century, it became part of the Timurids. In the 15th century, it became part of the Safavid dynasty. In the 16th century, it became part of the Ottoman Empire. In the 18th century, it became part of the Russian Empire. In the 19th century, it became part of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Gabala was captured by the Soviet Union in 1920 and became part of the Azerbaijan SSR. It became part of the Soviet Union in 1920. In 1991, the Republic of Azerbaijan was established and Gabala became its capital.
