Girish Chandra Ghosh Girish Chandra Ghosh (1863-1937) was an Indian Bengali poet and writer. He was also a noted critic and scholar of Bengali literature. He is considered to be one of the most important figures in the development of modern Bengali literature. Ghosh was born in 1863 in the village of Gopalpur in the Nadia district of West Bengal, India. He was the son of a school teacher. After completing his early education in his village, he went to Kolkata to study at the Hindu College. In 1887, he graduated from the college and began his career as a teacher. In 1896, Ghosh married Sarala Devi, with whom he had two daughters. He later married Radha Devi and had a son and a daughter. Ghosh began writing poetry in the 1890s. His first collection of poems, Prabodhini (1896), was published when he was only 23 years old. He became known as the 'Bard of Nadia'. Ghosh's major works include the collections of poems Rabindranath Tagore (1901), Gitanjali (1910), and Padma Purana (1912). He also wrote plays, essays, and novels. Ghosh died in 1937.
