Hadera is a city in the Central District of Israel. It is located on the Israeli Mediterranean coast, about east of Tel Aviv. In 2015, it had a population of 198,000. The city was founded in 1909 as a small agricultural village by Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. In 1918 it was renamed Hadera after the ancient city of Hadera in the Galilee. The city's population increased rapidly after the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, as many Jewish refugees from Arab countries settled in the city. Hadera is home to several universities and research institutes, including the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Israel Institute of Technology. The city has a growing high-tech sector, and is known for its wineries. The city's traditional dress is a long skirt and a shirt.
