Tribhovans are believed to have descended from the sage Bharadwaja, one of the seven ancient sages (Saptarishis) of Hinduism. The Tribhovan Brahmins are said to have migrated from the banks of the river Ganges in North India to Gujarat and then to Maharashtra.

Tribhovans are divided into two major sub-groups namely, the Deshastha and the Konkanastha. The Deshastha are found mainly in Maharashtra while the Konkanastha are found in Gujarat.
