The name 'Shanghai' is derived from the name of the city of Shanghai in Jiangsu province, China. The name was first recorded in 1668 in the journal of the Dutch East India Company. The name is composed of the two Chinese characters 上 (shàng), meaning 'up', and 沪 (hái), meaning 'river'. The name first referred to the area around the mouth of the Huangpu River on the southern shore of the mouth of the Yangtze River.
