Barack Obama Barack Hussein Obama II is the 44th and current president of the United States, in office since 2009. He was previously the 44th Governor of Illinois, from 2003 to 2007. Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Obama Sr. and Ann Dunham. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Obama attended Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he was the first African American to be elected to the Law Review. He was a community organizer in Chicago before his election to the Illinois State Senate in 1996. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, and was re-elected in 2008. In November 2008, he was elected 44th president of the United States, defeating Republican nominee John McCain. He was inaugurated on January 20, 2009.
