BAJIRAOGARJ Bajirao, a Maratha general, is one of the most celebrated figures in the history of the Maratha Empire. He is also remembered for his philanthropy, his patronage of arts and culture, and his military prowess. Bajirao's original name was Kalbadevi and he was born in 1720 in the village of Bajirao in the present-day Maharashtra state of India. He was the son of a Peshwa (prime minister) and became a general in the army of the Maratha Empire in the early 1750s. Bajirao played a major role in the Battle of Panipat in 1761, which ended the Second Maratha War (1757-1760). He later served as the governor of the Maratha province of Gujarat. Bajirao died in 1772.
