Bajirao Kulkarni (16 December 1775 – 18 September 1849) was an Indian statesman who served twice as the Governor-General of India. He was the first Maratha general to serve as the Governor-General. Bajirao was born in the village of Bajirao in the present-day Maharashtra state on 16 December 1775. He was the son of Peshwa Bajirao II and Jijabai. Bajirao had two elder brothers, Sambhaji and Rajaram. Bajirao Kulkarni was educated at home by his mother and later attended school in Satara. In 1794, he joined the army and soon became a general. He participated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War (1803-1805) and the Fourth Anglo-Maratha War (1817-1818). He later served as the commander-in-chief of the Maratha forces during the First and Second Anglo-Maratha Wars (1803-1818). Bajirao became the Peshwa (prime minister) in 1818. He played an important role in the development of Maratha power. He was also responsible for the construction of the Bajirao Palace in Pune. Bajirao was appointed the Governor-General of India in 1835. He served in this role until his death in 1849. During his time in office, he worked to improve the administration of the Indian subcontinent. He also played a role in the development of railways in India. Bajirao Kulkarni is considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of the Maratha Empire. He is also highly respected in India for his contributions to the development of the country.
